1976 Jaguar XJS Coupe Custom
To be auctioned on Saturday, June 14, 2008
Sold for $8,800
Chassis no. UG2W52434
Specifications:
Est. 240 bhp, 350 cu. in. 1987 Chevrolet Corvette V8 engine, GM 700R four-speed automatic transmission. Wheelbase: 102"
Customized by Art and Mike Chrisman with Corvette V8 power
Upon its introduction, the E-Type's replacement was powered by the familiar V12 engine, which did not provide the sports car performance one might expect. On the other hand, the MacPherson Collection's XJS offers the enthusiast a daring blend of elegant British design with small-block American V8 power. This project began in 1986 as Mr. MacPherson ordered a 1987 Chevrolet Corvette 350 cubic inch V8 engine with Tuned Port Injection and a 700R transmission, all through the parts department at his Chevrolet dealership. The renowned Art and Mike Chrisman subsequently went to work, installing the Corvette engine and transmission in Mr. MacPherson's 1976 Jaguar and removing the suspension for rebuilding, lowering, and powder coating. In addition, they fabricated a custom air box for the Tuned Port Injection to allow for proper hood clearance.
As the standard Jaguar wheels were to be replaced by larger and sportier Corvette wheels, considerable metalwork was in order as well. Using his extensive metalworking experience, Steve Davis added Porsche 928 flares to the rear fenders with matching handmade custom fender flares in front. Davis also fabricated and installed a custom grille while shaving the exterior trim. Finally, Mike Chrisman painted the XJS a custom shade of garnet red while Thornton Auto Upholstery reupholstered the interior in gray leather.
By all accounts, Mr. MacPherson was especially enthused about this particular project, frequently checking in on the progress of his specially-built Jaguar XJS. As presented, it exemplifies the "five-percent factor" that Mr. MacPherson so often spoke about. While it retains the general appearance of Jaguar's elegant XJS, the enthusiast is immediately drawn to the Corvette wheels and dramatic fender flares - indicators of the tire-smoldering Corvette power that lurks under the hood.
