    Seller's description:

I am offering for sale what I believe is the best pre-facelift XJS available.

I purchased this car in the Spring of 2021. I am the 3rd owner and the first one to own this car outside the original owner’s family. The original owner passed it to his brother who stored it in a warehouse for decades.

As received the car was in good condition but soon suffered the famous Magnetti ignition failure, where the distributor rotor grounds out and half of the V12 runs while the other side does not. Luckily there was no damage done to the engine or car. I took the opportunity to go through the entire engine bay and make upgrades where possible or necessary.

The engine got new spark plugs, wires, ignition coils and valve cover gaskets. Any components that were removed (ie – valve covers, intake manifolds, injector hold downs, brackets, etc) were cleaned and either painted or powder-coated. I installed rebuilt fuel injectors and replaced all the fuel injection hoses in the engine bay, trunk, and under the trunk. The oil cooler hoses were replaced with braided stainless steel AN hoses + fittings.

The cooling system was treated with a new Wizard Cooling aluminum radiator with two 13” Spal fans, new correct thermostats, and new silicone hoses. I refurbished the V12 cross-over pipe and installed a new header tank. The fans are controlled by an Auto Cool Guy PWM fan controller. The car does not over heat even in 90°+ heat with the AC running.

The electrical was improved with the addition of a CS-130D alternator that tested out at 179 amps. The starter was replaced with a WOSP gear-reduction starter. New electrical cables were made with 1/0 gauge cables. The injector harness was rebuilt with heat-resistant wiring and sleeving. In the trunk is a red-top Optima battery that is properly vented outside the car. There are 4 new Holley Retrobright “Classic White” LED headlamps out front. These provide a much needed improvement in lighting and produce more light with less amp draw. An on-board battery charger is included.

The HVAC was totally revamped. The stock Delenair MkIII system developed a heater core leak. Since parts are hard to find and expensive, I removed the entire Delenair system and replaced it with a Vintage Air Gen II Super unit. The Vintage Air unit fits completely behind the dash. Both the heater and AC work perfectly. The stock fresh air/recirculated air boxes were rebuilt to use a linear actuator to operate them – this allows you to circulate fresh air into the car at your discretion. The AC compressor was replaced with a genuine Sanden unit, a new parallel flow condenser was mounted in front of the radiator, and new hoses were made and routed to a more discrete location. During testing I was able to get the AC to blow 38° out vents. This eliminates the difficult trouble-shooting associated with the stock system as well as hard to find and expensive parts.

In March 2021 I purchased 5 new Cooper Cobra tires and had them mounted. During the winter of 2021/2022 I had all 5 tires dismounted and had the wheels refinished. All 5 rims where sandblasted an powder coated red. The wheel were put on a lathe and the outer edge of the rim, the basket weaves, and the wheel center were diamond cut to reveal the aluminum underneath. All 5 wheels were then powder-coated with clear gloss to keep the aluminum from oxidizing.

The front brake calipers were disassembled, sandblasted, the powder coated in matching red. They were re-assembled using stainless steel pistons. New front brake rotors and pads, brake hoses, wheel bearings, and wheel seals were installed as well. The front received new Bilstein shocks. The brake pressure accumulator and high pressure ABS feed were also replaced.

In the winter of 2021/2022 I dropped the entire rear cage and rebuilt it. The cage, the rear tie plate, the trailing arms, and the dog bones were all sand-blasted and powder coated in Lava Black. I installed new Metalastik bushings in the control arms and rebuilt the dog bones with new bearings and seals. The rear brakes were removed, sandblasted, powder coated red, and rebuilt. New rear brake rotors and pads as well as a new brake hose were installed. The subframe V-mounts were replaced with Jaguar branded mounts. The 4 rear shocks were replaced with KYB Gas-a-justs.

During the winter of 2021/2022 I replaced the factory 3-speed TH4000 transmission with a freshly rebuilt 700R4 using a John’s Cars Quarterbreed kit. The 700R4 has a better first gear for impressive acceleration and an overdrive 4th gear for impressive fuel mileage. The 700R4 also gives you a locking torque converter to help deliver respectable fuel mileage. The transmission cooling lines are braided stainless steel hoses with AN fittings connected to a front-mounted transmission fluid cooler.  My best mileage was a road trip to Wisconsin where I traveled 152 miles and used 5.6 gallons of gas – which works out to just over 27mpg. At the same time I also installed a Bell stainless steel exhaust system.

In the interior, I replaced the stock radio with a Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46 DAB radio which has Bluetooth, a USB port, and an SD card slot. Backing that up is a Blaupunkt 4-channel 1500 watt amplifier. The front doors have 5” Pyle speakers (these are the only speakers that fit perfectly behind the factory speaker grills) with Blaupunkt silk dome tweeters, and the rear has Blaupunkt 5.25” speakers and Blaupunkt silk dome tweeters. I replaced the factory steering wheel with a 14” Tourist Trophy wheel but the stock wheel is included if you’re not a fan. The stock cruise control was replaced by a Dakota Digital system that uses the stock buttons. There is a set of CocoMats wool carpets up front. There are two sets of keys included with the car.

I have collected a large stash of spare parts, including 2 gear reduction starters, stainless steel brake hoses, a spare gear shifter assembly, the brake pedal assembly to revert the car to non-ABS brakes as well as Mitsubishi master cylinders and a remote fluid reservoir.

Here is the complete list of everything that I know is not currently working:

    -      -Neither driver nor passenger seat heater works, but the adjustable lumbar support does

    -      -The rear window defroster does not work

So we're absolutely clear - the AC blows cold air, the heater blows hot air, the radio works, the engine runs well, the transmission is in excellent shape, the brakes work well, the tires are in great shape, the horn works.

I finished a 1,200 mile road trip in early May and the car was an absolute blast to drive and rode far more comfortably than either one of my new cars. So why am I selling it? I only have room for one project car at a time and this one must go so I can start on my next project. If you are interested please reach out. I can direct you to the forum where I detailed all the work done and I can send you an Excel file detailing all the work done + costs. I have receipts for all the work I have done, plus receipts going back to the original owner.

The car is located in the west suburbs of Chicago and is available for inspection.

This car sold on May 27,2022 with 52,051 miles. It was a great project and I had a ton of fun but it's time to move on to my next project. The car will be going to its new home in Canada.
