Auction Type Reserve
The seller of this 1994 Jaguar XJS Convertible reports being the second owner, and he picked it up “just lightly used” in 1997. He says, “I was looking for a sensible mid-life crisis car and was attracted to the looks of the XJS. I frequently drove it in the California coastal mountains with the top down.” That sounds like a perfect way to enjoy this British luxury cruiser, though the seller says he has not driven it much since 2017.
He reports that the only “significant work” under his ownership was performed by San Jose British Motors, which he says replaced the radiator and transmission in 1999. He also reports that a new top was installed in 2004.
POWERTRAIN
This 1994 Jaguar XJS is powered by a 4.0-liter DOHC inline-six, which was rated at 237 horsepower and 282 lb-ft of peak torque by the manufacturer when new. The owner says that the Jaguar’s engine is original, starts easily when cold, and idles correctly with no smoke. There are no leaks or weeps reported, and the four-speed automatic overdrive transmission is said to shift smoothly and have no leaks.
EXTERIOR
The seller states that he is unaware of any repaint before his ownership, but he says the hood and front fenders were recently repainted. He says that the original pin stripes were removed at that time, and “they barely show through in spots.” The seller explains that the design places the front valence panel very low and that it can catch on concrete parking stops. He says this required replacement of the underpan and small repairs to the front spoiler. There are two dimples in the trunk lid from pine cones falling on the car. The convertible top installed in 2004 “works correctly” with no leaks. All glass and seals “are good,” and there is no rust reported. All lights are affirmed to work. The side moldings have also been removed.
INTERIOR
According to the seller, the XJS’s carpet is in “good condition” and shows no significant wear. The interior polished wood trim appears in good condition in the provided photos. The leather seats are worn in places, but the seller says all power adjustments work. He says the backs of rear seats were damaged by the convertible top’s action, and the headliner is worn at rear from the top’s operation, as well. The driver’s seatbelt latch housing appears broken in photos. The trunk appears hardly used. The automatic climate control (heat and the A/C) is affirmed to work, as do all the gauges. The power windows and locks function as they should, and the original stereo still operates, per the seller. He reports that San Jose British Motors “sorted out issues with the alarm system” in 1998. The car has an accessory wood gearshift knob.
CHASSIS
The seller reports that the last chassis service was in 2000, at 60,000 miles, when new tires were installed and an alignment was performed. Tires have been replaced since, but the rears show 2013 DOT date codes and the fronts (reportedly purchased in 2016 as new old stock) show 2004 DOT date codes. He reports “no issues” with the shocks or bushings. There are “no problems or vibrations” with the original factory aluminum wheels, and the power steering is “tight with no leaks and no drifting,” he states. He reports “no needs” for the four-wheel antilock disc brakes. The undercarriage shows typical surface oxidation for the age. Many of the components appear to be original.
DOCUMENTATION
The seller states that this vehicle will be sold on a clean California title in his name. He will include some service receipts with the sale. In the hands of its second owner since 1997, this 1994 Jaguar XJS Convertible presents well with some cosmetic issues reported. It will need new front tires, and probably an updated chassis inspection/service, but is otherwise presented as ready for its next owner.
