Auction description:
1990 Jaguar XJS V12 CONVERTIBLE LHD
Colour Black
Odometer 81,000 Miles
Engine size 5300
Seller Type Private
Location Hampshire
Country United Kingdom
Fresh import from Oklahoma, USA
HMRC NOVA-cleared, ready for first UK registration
Presents in very good condition throughout
Dry-stored/driven, garaged when not in use
Small file of spares and maintenance invoices (ex-USA)
Cleared for UK sale by HMRC
According to the data plate, this LHD Jaguar XJS rolled off the Brown’s Lane plant in Coventry in the second week of November, 1989. Being US-bound, it received its first registration some eight weeks later, to one Joshua Vernaglia, a prominent lawyer in Winchester, Massachusetts.
Little further is known of the car’s history while over the pond. However, the accompanying paperwork suggests the car resided for a number of years in Oklahoma, prior to being imported into the UK during 2021 by the current custodian.
The car is offered up for sale by its custodian to fund the restoration of another historic Jaguar.
The Interior
Fully original interior to US-spec
Elegant leather upholstery throughout
Presented in ‘lovingly used’ condition
While presented in ‘lovingly used’ condition, it wears its 32 years remarkably well and retains its promise of being a delightful place in which to spend some immersive road time.
Specified to the high-end SE trim grade of the period, the interior is swathed in black leather and the full-width veneered wood trims on the dashboard, centre console and door cards present remarkably well for their age, as do the carpets and convertible hood headliner. Only the steering wheel has a patina commensurate with the car’s mileage and age.
Like the overall condition of the cabin, the boot is very tidy and clean and houses the fifth, non-matching spare wheel.
There is just the one small issue with the interior, namely the driver’s seat which exhibits signs of wear (but no tear) as pictured in the accompanying gallery. That evidenced, its repair would present no particular challenge to a professional upholsterer worthy of the name.
The Exterior
Original Jet Black (Code PDH) finish
Exhibits USA-trim not fitted on UK cars
Car is straight and true
Along with the smart and tidy interior, this car’s exterior is equally highly presentable. The original Jet Black paintwork gleams to a high standard and all the brightwork shines as intended. The only blemish to the brightwork is the flaking away of the chrome around the passenger side headlight cluster.
The front and rear light clusters are clear and all electrics are said to be in working order and both undersides of the boot lid and bonnet are in excellent condition. A cursory glance down each flank of the car shows no evidence of damage and the front number plate, bumper and valance – for all their vulnerability – remain in remarkably good condition.
The front, rear and side sills of the car are blemish-free, as are each of the door under-sills. The condition of the car highlights the love and care afforded the car over the years.
The car rides on a full set of bespoke Jaguar alloys, shod with a new set of Primewell Sport PS860 tyres all-round. The third brake light (a regulated requirement in the USA) would have been mounted by the US retailer prior to its first US registration.
It is noted that the electric roof requires manual help to raise and lower as the hydraulic system requires a topping up of fluid to make good. Accompanying the sale of the car will be an original white (unpainted) rear boot spoiler, which fortunately has never been fitted.
The Mechanics
Performed well to and from the nearby photo location
Fully maintained in the USA, no expense spared
NOVA-cleared and awaits first UK-registration
At the photo location, the chunky V12 fired up at the first ask every time and settled into an appreciative burble that only a well-maintained twelve-pot can make. The gearbox connected smoothly and the drivetrain engaged with no drama, requiring a just gentle rev to get underway.
The custodian reports the car to be very good mechanical condition with steering, brakes, engine, drivetrain and running gear performing as well as their respective British engineers intended over thirty years ago.
The service book had recorded the car’s earlier service events and is stamped through to 20,000 miles. There is a gap until the car was serviced at 50,000 miles in 1997. The car has been driven just 30,000 miles in the past 25 years.
The engine bay is very tidy and clean and, like the immediately visible parts of this Jaguar XJS-HE, the underside of the car presents in very good order – thanks to the dry Oklahoma climate – with the usual degree of natural oxidation that may reasonably be expected on a car of this age and mileage.
It is recommended that the car receive a tune-up as it has been either kept in storage or has been in transit for the past eighteen months. In addition, the central locking system may need attention as it beeps every so often when car is left unlocked…an idiosyncrasy typical to Jaguars of the period.

• Delivered new to the USA
• Four owners from new
• Left-hand drive

This left-hand drive, automatic transmission XJ-S V12 Convertible was first registered in Northborough, Massachusetts to a lady who owned it for 15-16 years. The Jaguar then went to Oklahoma where it enjoyed two owners, the second of whom sold the car to our vendor. The latter says that the car has been maintained rather than restored, and reports that it is in generally good condition. Accompanying documentation consists of a V5C Registration Certificate, MoT to May 2024, and an envelope of receipts for work carried out during its entire life.
