1989 Jaguar XJS 5.3L 12-cylinder
''Seriously fast, indecently luxurious, and very sexy.'' - Classic Motoring

The Jaguar XJS offered here is a numbers-matching V-12/3-speed automatic coupe in exceptional, truly ''garage kept'' condition (note the included car cover), inside and out, top and bottom. Fewer than 2,700 miles per year on the odometer bear this out. All 180 photographs available for viewing at GarageKeptMotors further attest to the care given this car befitting its top-of-the-Jaguar-line status.

The brilliant white exterior paint retains near-original luster. Original VIN labels applied to the body panels at the factory are still in place ensuring that no body damage or panel replacement has taken place. Even along the lower body and front and rear valences, the paint is in excellent shape with very little evidence of even ''ordinary'' wear and tear.

Inside, the combination of sumptuous tan leather upholstery, burled-wood dash door-and-center-console inlays looks and feels close-to-new... and very Jaguar. Condition of the leather trim on the door cards and complementary-colored carpeting is exemplary. Comfort features include air conditioning and the original factory-installed audio system, all fully functional. Even the condition of the trunk (or ''boot,'' if you're British-minded) exhibits the care this Jaguar has received through the years.

Under the hood, the V-12 power plant displays its two rows of six cylinders each, and the associated plumbing, all clean and tidy. Unlike so many cars today, there are no big plastic covers hiding the engine. Even the underside of the car shows no obvious damage or signs of misuse (we always look for exhaust-system damage as one indication, and it's all as it should be here). Pirelli tires on original ''basket weave'' style alloy wheels are in excellent condition.

This XJS is a ''grand tourer'' in every sense of that term. It awaits only a new pilot to continue the touring.

Price: $13,500

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
