Jaguar’s only victory in the Bathurst 1000 is well remembered by Australian enthusiasts. In 1985 Tom Walkinshaw’s factory-backed trio of mighty XJ-S coupes were the class above the field and dominated the race, and the only real surprise was that they did not finish 1-2-3. In fact, the British team lost one car early, Walkinshaw’s own car was delayed and ultimately finished third, leaving local hero John Goss to share the winning entry with German Armin Hahne. Our XJ-S here is a tribute to that success, built not as a replica of the winner, but of team boss Walkinshaw’s car. It is built around a 1980 road car and has been well executed throughout, starting with its original burgundy repainted in the correct British Racing Green by Sefton Smash Repairs (Sydney). Even the mix of local stickers on the UK paint has been replicated. The detail is impressive, with replica dry-break fuel fillers inset into the boot lid, replica battery cutoff switch on the plenum chamber and even the channel 7 in-car camera ‘donut’ sender on the roof! There’s a pair of Black California Vitelloni Sideview mirrors, all new chrome fittings and fixtures have been used on the exterior too, and it sits on a set of Avante Guarde 18in alloys that replicate the race wheels. Inside, the original cabin has been stripped and a roll cage fitted, as has a replica race seat, Irmscher race steering wheel, there’s pseudo race switches on the dash, and the door cards have been replaced by sheet aluminium. New black carpets and roof lining were also professionally fitted to finish it all off. Mechanically the booming V12 is fundamentally standard but features 3in bore air intakes with K&N air filters, Crane Cams XR700 fireball ignition, twin 2.25in high flow exhausts with modified pipes and side exhausts, and a super heavy-duty battery. In essence this is a very good replica of the real thing that would sit comfortably at an historic race meeting or in a museum, and would certainly be a unique talking point at the next club run! It comes with an original owner’s manual and folder, pictures of the car before its conversion, and an absolute plethora of paperwork. Previously on Victorian club registration, this unique Jaguar XJ-S replica race car is being offered for sale here unregistered.
