This totally original XJS has been in the ownership of one Norfolk farming family since new in 1979. It was bought from Mann Egerton in King's Lynn by George Wilson. The service book records regular servicing until his death in 1982. The car then became the property of his wife, Ivy Wilson, who used the car rarely until her death in 1995. Her son, David Rawkins, then took over the car. He used it very infrequently and kept it in a dry garage. The tax disc in the windscreen expired in 1999! David sadly died in January this year, and the car is offered for sale on behalf of his widow.

There is no evidence of accident damage (nor any recollection by the family of any accident during the car's life). The vendors agent states that some attention to the areas of the paintwork, which is showing some superficial rust, would restore the car to immaculate condition.

The last main agent service was in November 1982, when the car had recorded 17589 miles. After that, servicing was performed by the farm workshop and details were not recorded. At some stage the speedometer must have been replaced, as there is a service recorded in 1996 at 06997 miles, and the current reading is 07466.

The car's total mileage, since new, is reasonably estimated at around 25000, but there are no old MOT certificates to bear this out. The overall condition of the car, however, gives the impression of a little-used and genuine example. It runs smoothly and quietly, with good oil pressure. As far as is known, everything on the car works as it should, and it is intended to obtain a fresh MOT prior to the sale.

Early, pre HE, XJS's are quite rare these days and a 25000 mile (reputed) example from a single family is even rarer still. While much was made of the new Fireball heads on the HE engine, little was said about the lengthening of the final drive ratio, to 2.88 - 1, which was a major factor in the improved economy of the HE cars, after Jaguar were sued for misleading consumption figures. This long legged differential gave the car excellent cruising ability but the pre HE cars were quite a bit faster, from a standing start.

This is a rare find offering outstanding value.

Guide Price: £1500 to £2500

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
