The original owner was a senior executive at a well-known insurance company and kept it after he retired. The current keeper of the XJS knew about the car and had long coveted it until finally purchasing it in 2006, mainly due to its excellent service history. He took it on specifically for summer use, mostly for leisurely weekend excursions, high-profile car shows and events.
As a skilled mechanic and former car sales manager, the owner has kept up with the Jaguar’s maintenance and taken care of the relatively few issues that have arisen, such as the need for new shock absorbers and steering bushes, along with refurbishing the brake calipers and coil springs. It has only accumulated 4000 or so miles over his 16 years of ownership and spent almost all of that time in his garage under an original Jaguar fabric cover.
Despite having to sell the Jaguar due to declining health, the owner assured us that he would still be confident enough in its dependability to get in and drive it all day. Complete with its original owner's wallet contents, tool kit, jack, and its original issue HR Owen registration plates, this XJS also comes with three keys and an original spare wheel that has never been used. It has an MOT valid to April 2023.
The Interior
Original and well presented
OEM Jaguar stereo
Magnolia leather
Air conditioning
The leather interior is a well-equipped lavish affair, with no reports of any malfunctions with the comprehensive equipment and no significant issues to the leather trim. The magnolia leather seats are free from rips and retain a pleasing firmness. The driver's side bolster shows typical signs of age but hasn’t worn too badly. The carpets and mats, including the front over mats are in good condition, with some age-related wear but overall clean and well kept. All are bone dry. The back seats are tidy and look unused. The headlining has a few minor marks with minor signs of looseness noted but generally intact. The door cards are free of scuffs and the boot carpet is very clean, with evidence of light use.
The dashboard is in excellent condition, with no rips or damage noted on the leather padding or facia. The veneer is in super shape and retains its sheen. All of the electrics function, with the seats, aerial and electric windows working correctly with no straining from their motors. The gauges were proven to work, with no glitches observed on the day.
The switches, steering wheel and gear lever are in tidy condition. The cabin is fitted with speed control/cruise control, an analogue clock as well as a period multi-disc CD and tape player. Originality is the main theme of this well-kept interior, and this is reinforced by the retention of the period car phone which is obviously not functional but still makes an audible signal to let the driver know that it is ready for use. The air-con has recently seen a re-gas and blows icy cold. The interior mirror is an upgrade having been fitted by HR Owen upon request of the original owner.
The Exterior
Excellent paintwork
Structurally solid
Superb trim
This structurally sound example, which benefited from a factory-applied galvanising process, has led a charmed life. It hasn't seen much in terms of wet weather over the past 16 years and has always lived in a garage.
The owner has also pointed out that since he’s owned the Jaguar, it has not seen any welding. A check underneath it, suggests that the floor pan, jacking points, sills and inner wings strongly support this statement. The integrity of the engine bay, suspension mounts and boot floor also add to the good news, with no additional observations of damage seen to the exterior of the body. The wheel arches, wings, doors and windscreen scuttle are solid. There are no blemishes on the exterior metalwork. The panels are aligned perfectly with equal panel gaps and no issues regarding the opening and closing of the doors.
The lush British Racing Green paint is treated to a yearly polish and as a result, the finish has deep shine, with no age-related swirls or flat spots. The Jaguar does have a few signs of road wear as to be expected, but these are limited to a light peppering of stone chips on the nose of the car and the observation of minor lacquer damage on small sections of the nearside and bonnet, but you would be hard pushed to find them immediately. Even the coach lines are well preserved.
The bumpers are in good shape, they’re well mounted to the body with nothing other than minor scuffing noted on the front item. The trim is intact throughout, the chrome retaining its sheen, with nothing negative to report in relation to the glass, lights or rubber seals. The driver's side wing mirror is loose, but the owner suspects a new circlip could resolve the issue. In order to improve the aesthetics of the Jaguar’s presentation, the alloy wheels have been repainted and given a heat-bake treatment. Its Pirelli P6000 tyres have accumulated around 4000 miles of use and are still within the permissible tread depth limitations. They were put on the vehicle around the time the present owner purchased it.
The Mechanics
6.0-litre V12
Runs beautifully
Regularly serviced
The owner is rightfully proud of the reliability of the V12 6.0-litre power plant and has told us that it has never given him any trouble, thanks to his regular maintenance and servicing. The car was serviced by Jaguar main dealer up to 1999 when its mileage was recorded at 33,259 and it has subsequently been serviced by the owner. It starts up immediately, with no smoke from the exhaust and no warning lights being flagged up on the dashboard. The owner has also pointed out that as well as using premium unleaded fuel, the engine has also received quality coolant as part of the owners servicing schedule. The engine is ultra smooth on tick-over, with absolutely no issues in terms of rattles or knocks.
The owner drove us a short distance to show us how it behaved and performed. At urban speeds, it was practically silent, and, to be honest, it wasn't much noisier at the legal speed limit. The oil pressure remained constant at 40 to 50 psi once the engine warmed up to temperature. The automatic gearbox produced smooth quick changes up and down the gears, with no hesitancy with the kick down.
No knocking was heard from the gearbox, with the differential near silent. The XJS drove well on the uneven roads, with no crashing or knocks heard from the suspension, the power steering was silent and there were no untoward noises turning from lock to lock. The braking proved to be effective with no pulling to one side when pressed into action.
The discs and pads were noted to have plenty of life left in them. Visually, the engine is in a robust state with evidence of maintenance, backed up by the good condition of the hoses and ancillaries. The exhaust is intact, the owner has mentioned a minor scrape underneath it, but it hasn’t appeared to have affected its performance.
