I would like it to go to an enthusiast who will cherish it and is in a position to use it reasonably often.

Known as "Ruby" because of its maroon colour, Michael has used the car mainly for leisure, with continental trips to Europe serving as the perfect tourer.

It has always been garaged and meticulously looked after. After obtaining a Jaguar XKR Convertible, he is now selling the XJS as he cannot find the time to keep and use all of his cars.

The XJS is fitted with after-market wire wheels. They’re in good condition with tight spokes with mild wear noted on the centre hubs. The Falken tyres date from 2020. All are in good shape with even tread.

The car comes with the the original wheels too, so you can pick and choose the look of the car.

    Bodywork

The exterior presents well, the panels are flush to the body, with decent shut lines. All doors open and close with ease. We noted no damage to the panels, other than a couple of minor and treatable dents spotted on the top of the offside front wing and one on the nearside door close to the door handle. There is also minor corrosion spotted on both rear arch lips. The floor pan, engine bay, suspension mounts, wheel wells and boot floor appear to be solid.

The "Flamenco Red" paint has a positive lustre and is consistent in coverage. There are a few surface flaws on the lower half of the offside panels, scuttle and roof. We also spotted mild imperfections on the top of the wings. The car is generally free of marks, aside from a handful of chips on the nose of the car, mild scratches on the roof, slight surface scuff on the nearside wing and a touch-up on the nearside front wing.

The glass and lights are in good condition. The US Federal twin headlamps have corrosion on their bezels. The car comes with the original single piece units too, should you wish to revert back to a more stock look.

The chrome trim is in line with the car's age but is overall in good order. The bumpers are mounted flush to the body and are in good condition, although the end section by the nearside wheel arch has seen repair.

The "Magnolia" leather front seats have age-related creasing and bolster wear but should respond to specialist care. The rear seats are free from wear but show discolouration.

The carpets and mats are cleanly preserved with no dampness. The luggage area appears to have been carefully used.

    Dashboard

The dashboard is in good shape, with no issues spotted on the veneer. The centre console leather shows minor signs of age. The switches and controls are presented positively and all are said to work. The rest of the trim, door cards and headlining are in good order.

The steering wheel would benefit from a clean up as pictured, and the wood rim has a handful of fractures. The automatic gear selector is in good shape.

    Engine and Gearbox

The engine fires up without hesitancy, idling smoothly with no knocks or ticking. The dashboard warning lights stayed in check and aside from the usual cold engine condensation, the exhausts remained smoke-free.

Michael told us it has been fitted with a work of art, some 18 months back; a tailor made SS exhaust mated to a tubular SS manifold replacing the old iron block manifold. It is crafted to work beautifully with excellent gas flow, the manifold has been ceramic coated too.

The engine is cleanly presented showing evidence of maintenance. The car is regularly started up as part of the service offered by the storage facility. There were no fluid leaks noted on the day. The automatic gearbox operates as it should, free of slippage. It engages drives without any obstruction.

    Suspension and Brakes

The suspension deals with the uneven roads without any drama, absorbing the ruts with no unwanted noises.

The brakes are in good physical condition and proved to stop the car in a straight line.

The first thing we noticed about the Jaguar is how supple the ride is, gracefully managing the roads and free of knocks or bangs from the suspension. The refinement is helped by the smooth and almost silent experience of the 6.0-litre V12. It pulls well with no hesitation and cruises beautifully and at low speeds is free of any cabin noises or creaks.

The steering was compliant with no play or vibration, its braking was notably smooth and free of any unwanted feedback. We left the car running during a fairly warm day for 15+ minutes with no adverse readings on the gauges.

    Electrics and Other

Michael told us everything was working as far as he was aware.

The original one-piece headlamps and the period-correct alloys will be included in the sale.

First registered in August 1993, Michael has sent us a Word document detailing the work carried out on the car since he purchased it in 2001. It outlines the cost of maintaining the car's mechanical and cosmetic health.

Historical work includes engine maintenance, steering and braking work and rustproofing treatment. The most recent work includes new subframe mounts, undersealing, stainless steel exhaust and adjustable dampers. Receipts for all of the work and evidence of servicing can be requested directly through Michael. It has been stored in his garage and more recently, at a secure storage facility and has an MOT to February 2026.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
