This is the iconic XJS equipped with very reliable 4-litre six cylinder AJ6 engine, which is far more fuel efficient than the 5.3 or 6-litre V12. The A6 TVH number plate will remain with this car. The car’s bodywork is exceptional and finished in striking Diamond Blue with correct coachlining and mint chromework. The interior is unmarked light grey leather enhanced by beautiful walnut veneer.

The electric folding roof is finished in Navy Blue Mohair and is in excellent condition. This is complemented by an unmarked hood cover. US Quad headlights make this stand out from the crowd. This outstanding Jaguar boasts comprehensive service books and records. The original unused Jaguar toolkit is also included. This car has been dry stored every winter.

On the Outside

This XJS is in beautiful condition. There are slight marks to the top of canvas hood, but it’s otherwise lovely, in its contrasting darker blue. And the car’s paintwork is nearly faultless – we spotted a tiny chip in the paint on the nearside rear wheel arch, but we’re clutching at straws really.

The original Jaguar cross spoke alloy wheels are all in excellent condition, and each is shod in a matching Pirelli P600 tyre.

The Jaguar boot badge has lost its shine – odd as the XJS one on the other side of the boot is perfect. Either way, no big deal. The car overall looks fabulous, with superb brightwork, paint and trim, and tight, even panel gaps.

On the Inside

The bad news isn’t bad at all – there’s some very slight wear on the driver’s seat but no lost stitching, and a recolouring kit would probably get it looking close to new again. That said, the wear is so light that you could just leave it, as it really isn’t a big deal. And the good news?

Well the good news is excellent – as is every other aspect of the interior. It’s in lovely condition and very original too – even the standard Jaguar stereo unit is still sitting happily in the shining burr walnut dash.

The leather is beautiful, the wood has a deep, lustrous shine and the switchgear all looks unmarked. It really is a lovely cabin to sit in.

Underneath

While the E-Type’s Jaguar XK engine is a classic, it was designed during World War 2 and, especially in late spec 4.2-litre guise, it wears out quickly by modern standards. And Jaguar’s sumptuous V12 is a wonderful thing, but it struggles to return more than 15mpg, even in later HE spec.

The 4-litre AJ6 straight six, on the other hand, will easily cover three times the mileage of an XK engine before needing any work, and can manage around twice that fuel mileage figure on a run. So a classic Jaguar convertible with this engine really is a very good thing indeed.

In fact we’d go as far as saying that this car represents the peak of XJ-S development. It has the most useable engine and, coupled with the excellent automatic gearbox, it’s a proper mile muncher that will run and run, without breaking the bank. The under bonnet area on this one is in very clean and original shape, with only minor surface blemishes on some of the plated components.

Spam prevention question (must be answered):
The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
