Please ignore the standard Carsales description as it only covers automatic models.
The XJ-S was released on 10 September 1975. 3 weeks earlier, on 21 August, the first four 4-speed manual V12 vehicles rolled off the assembly line.
This is number 2 of only 385 V12 manuals ever built (115,413 V12s built in total).
The first 2 cars were retained by Jaguar as press cars, and these appeared in the magazines of the car as journalists marvelled at their pace and grace. A copy of every magazine where this car was tested is included in the extensive compendium which comes with this vehicle.
I have not been able to locate Car No. 1, so I’m not sure if it still exists. No. 2 went back to the factory during 1978 (after about 30,000 miles of press use) to have a new engine and gearbox fitted and an updated manufacturer plate installed. The build book record was amended accordingly. The car was then sold to a famous ex-race car driver in the UK.
It came to Australia in 1992 and a medical specialist spent over $50,000 during his ownership, to fully refurbish the car (receipts supplied). The car has been kept as original as possible (obviously all matching numbers) and everything works. Currently with 92,700 miles showing (which includes the original 30,000 of the first engine) the car drives impeccably. It has new tires and the Jaguar Heritage certificate to verify its pedigree. This is likely the earliest V12 manual XJ-S in existence and is significantly more rare than a V12 manual E Type.
These pre HE V12s were the most powerful version of the 5.3 litre, fuel injected engine with high compression ratio, and using the same Borg and Beck gearbox as the V12 manual E types.
